Iran actor Mahjoub: ‘The Spiritualist’ is Me

Noted Iran artist Hossein Mahjoub says in an ifilm exclusive interview that the character he plays in ‘The Spiritualist’ series pretty much resembles the actor.

Mahjoub told ifilm that “one of the most beautiful roles I played was the one in ‘The Spiritualist’ and I realized form the very beginning that this series would become history by reading the screenplay.”

He also noted that Khalil in ‘The Spiritualist’ was so close to my own character in real life.

Mahjoub studied literature in high school and later took different acting classes with a number of famous actors and directors.

He made his film debut in Bahram Beizaei’s ‘Heavy Rain’ (1972).

This veteran actor has starred in many movies, including ‘Perhaps Another Time’ (1987), ‘The Wasteland’ (1988), ‘Reyhaneh’ (1989), ‘The Moon and the Sun’ (1995), ‘Slivers of the Sun’ (1995), ‘How to Kill Love’ (2002), ‘The Kingdom of Solomon the Prophet’ (2008), ‘Toranj’ (2013), and ‘The Resident of the Middle Floor’ (2013).

Mahjoub played in his first series in ‘Bravehearts of Tangestan’ (1971-1973).

He has appeared in several series such as ‘Sarbedaran’ (1984), ‘The Sultan and the Shepherd’ (1981-1984), ‘Jungle Commander’ (1984-1987), ‘The Spiritualists’ (2006), ‘House of Outsiders’ (2008), ‘On the Way to Zayandeh Roud’ (2010), ‘The Times’ (2012), ‘The Star of Life’ (2013), and ‘Ancient Land’ (2010-2015).

Here are some highlights of what Mohajoub said during the interview conducted in Persian:

1. ‘The Spiritualist’ had a different story and grabbed me due to the fact.

2. The team involved in making the series knew their jobs well and it showed a lot of promise from early stages.

3. Every human being is a collection of characteristics, good or bad. It is up to a given person to decide which trait to nurture. The actor is the same and they chose a certain role and try to represent such character. When I choose a positive or negative character, it means that I picked one of my own characteristics.

4. I try to play different characters every time I take on a new project in my career. I even bargain for my make-up so that my roles differ in works I choose.

5. I just finished shooting for a series titled ‘The Old Land’. Most recently, I play a role in ‘Khibula’, a Gordian historical drama film, playing the role of Georgia president after the fall of the former Soviet Union. I did all my dialogues for the film in the Gordian language and had no difficulty in doing so. All cast members were from Georgia. The film will screen aboard, but there are chances the film will be shown in Iran theaters as well.
